Top 10 Wedding Venues in BOP and Beyond
There’s no shortage of beautiful places to get married in the Bay of Plenty. But after years of setting up behind the decks at venues across the region, I’ve got a pretty clear picture of which ones are genuinely special — and a few things worth knowing about each of them that you won’t find on their websites.
These are my personal top ten, in no particular order.
Ātaahua Garden Venue
Ātaahua means beautiful in Te Reo Māori, and it earns the name. Elegant European-inspired gardens sit within native bush, and the result is a venue that feels both lush and intimate at the same time.
There are two distinct spaces here — a stunning outdoor marquee with a courtyard perfect for the ceremony, and an upstairs indoor area that works beautifully if the weather has other ideas. The courtyard fireplace makes for a gorgeous ceremony backdrop, and the grass area outside the courtyard walls is ideal for canapes.
From a DJ’s perspective, this place is a dream. The whole venue is wired for sound, which means I can set up in the marquee and pump music wherever it’s needed throughout the evening — ceremony, canapes, reception — without any awkward gaps or relocations.
Abby and the team are fantastic. You’re in very good hands.
Best for: Couples wanting elegance with a natural setting, and the flexibility of indoor or outdoor options.
Old Forest School
A former country school built in 1933, set on five acres of romantic garden outside Tauranga. Su-An and Alister have done something remarkable with this place — it genuinely has to be seen to be believed.
When you’re here, the whole property is yours. The gardens, the buildings, every quiet corner of it. There are multiple ceremony spots, and every single one of them is stunning. The schoolhouse provides a wet-weather option, though it can be a tight squeeze depending on your guest numbers — but by that point in the day, everyone’s getting to know each other, so rubbing shoulders for half an hour isn’t really a problem.
The barn beside the reception space is where the dancing happens, and it’s a brilliant spot for it. Rustic, characterful, and just a genuinely cool place to have a boogie.
One important note: this is a destination venue. It’s not close to anything, so you’ll need to organise buses for your guests. But once everyone arrives, nobody wants to leave.
Also worth knowing — the venue doesn’t have its own sound infrastructure anywhere on the property, so I’d strongly suggest having your DJ there for the full day to take care of sound from start to finish.
Best for: Couples who want a truly unique, destination-feel wedding without leaving the Bay of Plenty.
Eagle Ridge Country Estate
Nestled in the hills just 16km from Tauranga, Eagle Ridge offers something that’s hard to find this close to the city — genuine space, and views that go all the way across to Mount Maunganui and the Bay of Plenty coastline.
At the bottom of the property is a wonderful lodge with an outdoor ceremony space where the views will honestly compete for your guests’ attention. The homestead is a beautiful setting for canapes and pre-dinner drinks. Up top, the main reception building is seriously spacious — if you’ve got a large guest list, this is a venue that can handle it without feeling crowded.
Best for: Larger guest lists, couples who want rural grandeur with ocean views, and anyone who doesn’t want to sacrifice space.
Black Walnut
I DJed at Black Walnut in their first year of opening and remember thinking — This is a cool venue. Since then, the greenery has grown, the space has been developed, and what was already impressive has become something genuinely special.
Set on acres of land among towering black walnut trees and mature gardens, the venue has a main building for the dinner and dancing, a courtyard perfect for canapes, and two newer ceremony spaces that are worth mentioning specifically: the greenhouse and the tree church. Both are stunning.
One thing to flag for the tree church — there’s no power in that space. So if that’s where you’re planning your ceremony, make sure your DJ knows in advance. They’ll either need battery-powered gear or a very long extension lead. Not a dealbreaker, just something to sort out early.
Best for: Couples wanting a garden venue with real character, a variety of ceremony settings, and a beautiful indoor reception space.
Ōmahanui Venue
Abundant gardens, cascading greenery, towering gum trees, native bush, and flowing waterways. Ōmahanui is genuinely something else.
The bamboo ceremony area is the standout feature — platforms over the water with walkways branching off back to the lawn and marquee. It’s magical, and it photographs beautifully. The lawns are impressive, and the whole property has a sense of lushness that feels completely removed from everyday life.
As a DJ, I’m particularly happy that there’s power in the ceremony area. It sounds like a small thing, but it makes a real difference to how smoothly the day flows for everyone.
Best for: Couples who want a garden venue with a real wow factor, and a ceremony setting that genuinely stops people in their tracks.
Amberlee Garden Venue

Five minutes from Te Puke and 25 minutes from Tauranga, Amberlee Garden sits in the middle of privately owned kiwifruit and farmland with a rustic country charm that’s hard to replicate.
The garden ceremony space is beautiful, with room for grazing tables, a garden bar, and lawn games. The Packing Shed, a former kiwifruit packhouse, now serves as the reception space and can seat up to 150 guests. There’s also an upstairs mezzanine that works as a wet-weather ceremony option.
One practical thing to be aware of: there’s a reasonable distance between the ceremony and canape area and the reception space, connected by an uphill gravel driveway. It’s manageable for most guests, but if you have elderly guests or anyone with mobility considerations, it’s worth thinking through in advance, whether that’s arranging a vehicle to shuttle people up, or just giving guests a heads up so nobody arrives in shoes that aren’t up to it. Power runs throughout all areas of the venue though, which makes the day flow smoothly from a sound perspective. Worth noting: Amberlee is an exclusive venue that hosts only six weddings per year. If it appeals, get in early.
Best for: Couples after rustic country charm, a relaxed Bay of Plenty setting, and a venue that genuinely feels like it belongs to you for the day.
Ebony Vines Venue
Located in the heart of kiwifruit country, Ebony Vines is a hidden gem in the truest sense. Unless you’re specifically looking for it, you’d never know it was there.
The old packhouse has been refurbished with an industrial vintage style that manages to feel both elegant and relaxed at the same time. Everything is catered for weather-wise, and the layout of the venue is compact in the best possible way – everything is close together, which makes for a really connected atmosphere and means the music carries naturally through the space.
From a DJ perspective, it’s an easy venue to work. One setup, a satellite speaker where needed, and the sound is sorted without any drama.
Best for: Couples who love an industrial vintage aesthetic and want a venue that feels like a discovery.
The Black Barn
A rustic farm barn with kauri doors, macrocarpa walls, polished concrete floors, and a pebble courtyard entrance. The surrounding 65-acre farm offers grassy meadows, native bush, a lake, and mountain backdrops that photographers love.
The feature stone firepit is one of those details that elevates an evening – a natural gathering point once the formalities are done, perfect for toasting marshmallows, or just standing in the dark with a drink and the people you love most.
One thing to be aware of: the barn holds up to 150 guests, but at that capacity, it can get tight when you factor in a DJ setup and a proper dance floor. If your guest list is on the larger end, it’s worth discussing the layout with the venue in advance.
Best for: Couples who love rustic charm, outdoor fires, and a venue with genuine farm character.
Te Tumu Estate
Situated in Pāpāmoa, Te Tumu Estate sits between the Kaituna River and Pāpāmoa Beach — close enough to town to be convenient, far enough away to feel like you’ve escaped it entirely.
The reception space is built around a decked area that wraps around magnificent walnut trees. As the evening comes in, those trees glow with fairy lights, and the fully clear marquee means you can look out at the orchard and the night sky while staying comfortable inside. The caravan bar is a lovely touch that fits the relaxed, rustic feel of the whole place.
One honest note on timing: Te Tumu Estate is at its absolute best on a warm summer day. Toward the edges of the wedding season (early spring or late autumn), the weather can make the open setting feel a little cool. Something to factor in if you’re planning outside peak summer.
Best for: Couples who want a relaxed, orchard setting close to Tauranga with a magical evening atmosphere.
Ohakuri Rise
Right, I’ll be upfront — Ohakuri Rise is not technically in the Bay of Plenty. It’s near Taupō. But it is far too good not to include, so here it is.
The views from this venue are, without question, the best I have ever seen at a wedding. Sitting on the tranquil shores of Lake Ohakuri with geothermal steam rising in the distance and native bush all around, it’s the kind of backdrop that makes guests go quiet for a moment when they first arrive. Breathtaking is not an overstatement.
The venue offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, experienced coordination, and catering, and from a DJ’s perspective, it is one of the best-wired venues I’ve worked in. I can set up in one spot and push sound out across the entire property without any gaps. It’s the kind of infrastructure that makes a night run seamlessly.
Oh, and if you need to arrive by helicopter, there’s space on the lawn. Just saying.
Best for: Couples who want something genuinely extraordinary, don’t mind travelling beyond the Bay, and want views that nobody in attendance will ever forget.
A Final Note
Every venue on this list has something genuinely special about it. The right one for you comes down to your guest count, your budget, your vibe, and, honestly, your gut feeling when you walk in.
